By late tonight, four new WPIAL football champions will be crowned.
Today is Super Saturday. All four WPIAL championships will be played at Heinz Field. Check out Varsity Blog throughout the day and night for updates and look to the right for reports and thoughts on Twitter.
It also starts when Sto-Rox meets North Catholic in the Class A final at 11 a.m. It will be followed by Woodland Hills vs. Central Catholic in the Class AAAA final at 2.
At 5 p.m., South Fayette takes on Aliquippa in the Class AA championship. The final game at 8 p.m. pits West Allegheny vs. Central Valley for the Class AAA title.
The storylines are many. Does Sto-Rox quarterback Lenny Williams, the WPIAL's all-time leading passer, finally get a WPIAL title in his third try? West Allegheny's Bob Palko and Woodland Hills' George Novak are both seeking their seventh WPIAL titles.
Aliquippa could be the first team to win three consecutive Class AA titles since Braddock in the 1950s. But the Quips will meet a South Fayette team that features a strong passing game. Two of the games - Class A and AA - match undefeated teams. Since the WPIAL started playoffs in all classifications in 1977, this is only the 18th and 19th title games matching perfect teams.
