The WPIAL Board of Control met today and approved new sections for basketball.
Central Catholic is moving to the northern section in Class AAAA and Fox Chapel will stay in the eastern section. New Castle moves down to Class AAA and will be in the same section with Beaver Falls, who is playing up in Class AAA.
Below is the alignment. The WPIAL basketball committee made the alignment last week, and the WPIAL Board of Control approved it today.
But before we get to the alignment, a few notes from the WPIAL Board of Control:
**** The WPIAL will bring basketball player Nick Aloi in for a hearing this spring. Aloi, a sophomore, transferred last month from Ellwood City to Lincoln Park. He was Ellwood City's leading scorer as a freshman, but is sitting out this season with a knee injury. Ellwood City did not "sign off" on the transfer so the WPIAL will have a hearing to determine if athletic intent was involved.
**** Sto-Rox asked the WPIAL for a waiver concerning a mistake it claims it made in counting enrollment. Sto-Rox said it gave the PIAA incorrect enrollment numbers last fall. The numbers put Sto-Rox in Class AA instead of Class A. Sto-Rox also missed a deadline to correct the mistake and the Vikings were then placed in Class AA.
The WPIAL ruled it cannot grant a waiver and that the school must appeal to the PIAA. But the WPIAL said even if the PIAA grants Sto-Rox a "pardon" because of the mistake, the WPIAL will not change its schedule this season and will keep Sto-Rox in Class AA until next year.
"The schedules have been out and it's not fair to change all the other schedules this year for one team because of their mistake," WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley said at the meeting.
