Some items that fell off my laptop.
Penn State has started to show more interest lately in Montour's Devin Wilson.
Wilson is a senior do-it-all-player for Montour. He plays receiver, running back and defensive back. Although Penn State has not offered Wilson a scholarship, the Nittany Lions have most definitely ramped up their interest level. Wilson attended a Penn State game recently.
Wilson has offers from North Carolina State and a few Mid-American Conference schools. He is having a terrific senior season. Last week he rushed for more than 100 yards and also caught eight passes and had more than 100 yards receiving.
For the season, Wilson has rushed for 442 yards on 50 attempts, is tied for second in the WPIAL in receptions with 41 for 659 yards, has 30 tackles on defense and two interceptions.
Don't forget that besides the scholarship offers for football, Wilson also has a few offers from Division I colleges for basketball.
Perfect again?
Aliquippa plays Beaver Falls tonight and finishes the season next week against Beaver. If the Quips win both games, they will finish the regular season undefeated for the third year in a row.
And if Clairton wins its final two games, the Bears will finish the regular season undefeated for the third year in a row.
I wonder how many times in WPIAL history a team has gone undefeated in the regular season three years in a row? I bet not many.
Just know this: There are 69 teams in the WPIAL that don't have three undefeated regular seasons in their school history.
I'm just sayin'
*** I still say last week's Upper St. Clair-Bethel Park game was one of the strangest I have ever seen. Bethel Park scores 24 points and wins, despite having only three first downs the entire game.
*** Upper St. Clair coach Jim Render remarked after the game how it had been a tough few days for him. He was a good friend of Beano Cook, who passed away last week.
*** I'm really looking forward to Sunday and Monday, when I get to spend hours figuring out all the WPIAL playoff scenarios (gag). But it is a necessary evil because inquiring minds want to know.
*** It's hard to believe there is only two weeks left in the regular season. But don't even think the season is close to being over. After the regular season, there is still seven weeks of playoffs (PIAA and WPIAL). Someone said to me the other day that they couldn't care less about high school football after the WPIAL playoffs are over. You agree?
*** Under the WPIAL playoff system in Class AAAA, the top five teams in each of the three conferences make the playoffs, as well as one "wild-card" sixth-place team. In reality, the sixth-place team in the Northern Eight gets penalized under the WPIAL "wild-card" system. Under the system, the two sixth-place teams in the Foothills and Southeastern Conferences get to throw out their worst conference game. Why? Because Northern Eight teams play only seven conference games while Foothills and Southeastern teams play eight. So the sixth-place team in the Northern Eight doesn't get to throw out any conference games.
But with only three conferences, the WPIAL had to come up with some kind of system to find a 16th team. This might be as good as any.
*** I used to think that taking 16 teams to the playoffs in each classification wasn't a good thing. I don't feel that way any more. It does create a lot more excitement for more teams during the regular season.
Predictions
Here are my picks for the top games around the WPIAL and City League this weekend.
CLASS AAAA
Gateway at Penn-Trafford - After losing to North Hills in the season opener, Penn-Trafford has reeled off six wins in a row. But the Warriors still aren't the class of the Foothills Conference. First place will belong to Gateway after this one. Winner: Gateway
Also, Seneca Valley over Bethel Park; Woodland Hills over Peters Township.
CLASS AAA
Franklin Regional at Hampton - How good is 6-1 Hampton? I'm still not sure. Remember, the Talbots lost to 1-6 Greensburg Salem. But they also beat Knoch and pretty much handled everyone else. This game will tell us a lot more about Hampton. Franklin Regional seems 
to have righted the ship after a season-opening loss to Mars. But I wonder if standout running back Dane Brown (pictured) is still not 100 percent. He missed a few games with an ankle injury and has only 231 yards rushing since his return. Brown came into this season with 3,299 yards in his career. But maybe he is getting better every week and maybe he will be a key in this game. Winner: Franklin Regional.
West Allegheny at Montour - I will be in the house for this one. It's the Post-Gazette Game of the Week. FYI: No more three QB system for Montour. Coach Lou Cerro had been using three QBs since the start of the season, but used only two last week. The reason is Max Rosinsky has a labrum injury. That means Tynen Greer and Ryan Mihelcic will handle the QB chores from now on. The key to this game will be which team runs the ball better. Montour clinches the No. 1 seed in the Parkway Conference with a win. A West Allegheny victory could force a three-way tie for first at the end of the season between West Allegheny, Montour and Central Valley. Winner: Montour.
CLASS AA
Beaver Falls at Aliquippa - This is Root Sports' TV game tonight. Will the Quips finally have a game of consequence? They have forced the mercy rule in all seven games so far. This one won't be a mercy rule, but it will be another Aliquippa victory. Winner: Aliquippa
Washington at Freeport - This is a non-conference game, but most certainly an interesting matchup. Washington is 7-0 and Freeport 6-1. With only two weeks left in the regular season, you wonder how the coaches will approach this game. But it could have an impact on playoff seedings. Winner: Washington.
Also, Steel Valley over South Allegheny, Greensburg Central Catholic over Yough, Valley over Kittanning.
CLASS A
Northgate at Springdale - Springdale better be careful. A loss and the team's string of 10 consecutive playoff appearances could be in jeopardy. Then again ... Winner: Springdale.
North Catholic at Neshannock - This is another good non-conference game matching two 6-1 teams. Neshannock proved some things to me a few weeks ago in a close loss AT perennial power Rochester. Winner: Neshannock.
CITY LEAGUE
University Prep vs. Perry - It will be an emotional game for University Prep after starting lineman Ne'Ondre Harbour was shot and killed Sunday night. The winner gets the No. 1 seed in the semifinals of the City League playoffs. I say no matter who wins this game, they will meet again in two weeks for the City League title. Winner: University Prep.
