The new Post-Gazette WPIAL and state football rankings are below. But first a little note from a Friday game.
It turns out that Avonworth's Zach Chandler reached a passing mark rarely seen by WPIAL quarterbacks.
Chandler, a 6-foot-5 senior, completed 16 of 30 passes for 405 yards in a WPIAL victory against Shenango. Chandler 
became one of only eight quarterbacks to throw for 400 yards in a game. Chandler's performance came a week after another WPIAL quarterback, Riverside's Jason Dambach, set a WPIAL record when he threw for 551 yards against Neshannock.
It must be something about pass defenses in the Class A Big Seven Conference. Shenango plays with Neshannock in the Big Seven. Avonworth defeated Shenango in a non-conference contest.
For Chandler, it was another chapter in a big comeback story. He missed most of his sophomore year with a broken collarbone and most of his junior season with a broken ankle. In four games this year, he has thrown for 1,270.
With what Chandler has done this year, it makes you wonder if he has a chance to break the WPIAL regular-season passing record? Seton-LaSalle's Bruce Gradkowski set it in 2000 with 2,754 yards. Avonworth has played four games and has five left.
Rankings
Here are the Post-Gazette rankings after Week 4. There was little change in the state and WPIAL rankings. Shenango was ranked No. 4, but dropped only to No. 5 in Class A after the loss. Jeannette moved up to No. 4. Steel Valley's victory against Seton-LaSalle knocked the Rebels out of the top five in Class AA and put Steel Valley into the No. 5 spot.
