One of the top sophomore basketball players in the state will miss some time with a knee injury. But the good news is the injury to Robby Carmody does not appear to be serious.

Carmody, a 6-foot-4 guard who already has a handful of scholarship offers from Division I colleges, sustained an injury to his left knee in the third quarter of Saturday's game against Bethel Park. Carmody got a steal and was going for a breakaway dunk when his left leg gave out as he planted it.

Carmody left the game and did not return.

Carmody saw a doctor today. His father, Rob Sr., is Mars' coach and he said the injury appears to be a hyperextension. The younger Carmody is expected to miss 10 days or more.

"It was scary," said Carmody the coach. "He ran through a pass and he was just full speed ahead. He went to go up and his knee just gave out. He fell and when he fell he also landed on the knee.

"The thing about him is when he was on the ground, the first thing he asked was 'Did I make the layup?' I had to tell him no."

Dad laughed.

Carmody had scored 23 points already in the game. The night before, he scored 20 points when Mars beat Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic.

"He's just so competitive," said Carmody, the coach. "When he was on the bench, he said to my wife [Stephanie], 'Go home and get that knee brace we have so I can finish this game.' She was, like, 'I am not going home.' That's just him and the way he is."

Robby Carmody already has scholarship offers from Pitt, Duquesne, Xavier, Purdue and Penn State, among others. Ohio State and Dayton are among the other schools showing interest.

Mars is one of the top Class AAA teams in the WPIAL.
