Robby Carmody already has a number of major-college scholarship offers. But two more college powers are dipping their toes into the Carmody recruiting waters.
The University of Arizona and Kentucky are now showing interest in Carmody, a 6-foot-4 junior guard at Mars High School. Assistant coaches from both schools recently called Mars coach Rob Carmody (Rob's father) and sent text messages to Robby (pictured in a state playoff game last season against Highlands). Let's quickly point out that neither Arizona or Kentucky has offered a scholarship. But there does seem to be genuine interest.
Arizona assistant coach Mark Phelps called Rob the coach recently, as did Kentucky assistant Joel Justus.
"Arizona said they're going to maybe come watch Robby work out some time soon," said the elder Carmody. "We'll see what happens."
Of course, both head coaches at Arizona and Kentucky are from Western Pennsylvania - Sean Miller and John Calipari.
Rob the coach put his tongue firmly in his cheek when talking about Calipari.
"He might be the only coach in this whole thing who might really believe there is a place called Mars because he's from Moon."
Good one, coach.
But back to Robby's recruitment. This is the time when college coaches travel to see recruits work out or participate in open gyms at their high schools. Pitt assistant Tom Richardson was at Mars Wednesday night along with a Purdue assistant. Both Pitt and Purdue have offered Carmody, along with Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, Duquesne, Penn State - and others. Pitt had Carmody at Heinz Field for the Penn State football game Saturday.
Besides coaches from Pitt and Purdue showing up at Mars this week to watch Carmody work out, coaches from Michigan, Penn State, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Vanderbilt also were on hand. More are expected next week.
Robby, by the way, is not close to making a decision. He hopes to possibly make it by next summer.
