The coach who guided McKeesport to two WPIAL and two PIAA titles will be returning as coach.
McKeesport High School has decided to hire George Smith as its new coach. But he's really the old coach. Smith (pictured) coached McKeesport for 28 years before resigning after the 2009 season. Jim Ward took over but resigned after three seasons, and Smith was interested in coming back.
Smith was a finalist for the job along with Clairton defensive coordinator Wayne Wade and Baldwin coach Jim Wehner. Tonight, McKeesport informed Wade that Smith had been chosen as the new coach.
But Smith's hiring won't be official until a school board meeting next week.
Smith won 197 games in his 28 seasons along with the two WPIAL and PIAA titles.
