Add Baldwin to the list of schools looking for a new football coach.
Earlier tonight, Baldwin opened Jim Wehner's position as coach. He was with the Highlanders for four years and had a 12-25 record.
Baldwin school officials aren't saying exactly why Wehner's positions was opened. But sources said Baldwin wasn't exactly happy that Wehner was looking elsewhere for a job. He was one of the candidates for the McKeesport coaching job, but George Smith is expected to be hired as McKeesport's coach next week.
When Wehner was hired as coach, he also was given a job at Baldwin as a physical education teacher and also paid to run weightlifting programs.
***** In other WPIAL football coaching news, Deer Lakes hired T.J. Wiley as its new coach. Wiley was Northgate's coach the past two seasons. He also had been Penn-Trafford's coach for one season.
***** Onto some basketball talk. Funny how things have worked out so far in Class AAAA Section 3 after the first half of section play. Hampton was undefeated and the No. 2-ranked team in all of Class AAAA until last week.
But after the first half of section play, look at the Sectiion 3 standings and you will see Hampton is in fourth place. Hampton has lost three section games in a row to North Allegheny, Seneca Valley and New Castle. The standings have New Castle in first, North Allegheny second, Seneca Valley third and Hampton fourth.
It's not all that surprising Hampton lost a few games. But don't count out the Talbots. They are still a top team that could make a long playoff run. They trailed New Castle by only two points heading into the fourth quarter last night.
***** A shoutout to Seneca Valley. The Raiders are 10-3 and have had some impressive wins lately, especially beating Hampton by 22.
Seneca Valley has nice overall size and a talented senior lead guard in Easton Bazzoli. The Raiders' size make their zone defenses tough to deal with for some teams. Sure, Seneca Valley was blown out by New Castle. But who hasn't struggled against New Castle?
Seneca Valley is in sole possessioin of third place in Section 3.
***** This is no knock against Jeannette's Ciara Gregory. She's a talented player, a terrific shooter and leading the WPIAL in scoring. I just don't remember hearing too many players in high school taking 41 shots in a game. But that's how many Gregory took Monday when she scored 38 points against Greensburg Central Catholic.
Hey, big scorers do sometimes shoot a lot. The 41 attempts was unusual, even for Gregory. For the year, she is averaging 25 shots a game.
***** P-G colleague Brad Everett covered the South Fayette-Chartiers Valley game last night and came up with this interesting nugget. South Fayette scored a basket at the buzzer of every quarter.
