[Full Friday night scoreboard + Updated WPIAL standings]

A ranked team in all four WPIAL classes and the City League went down in Week Three, as did two of the region's top running backs.

Washington's Shai McKenzie went down with a knee injury and did not return in a 56-10 win over Charleroi. Reports differ on his outlook but nothing will be known until he sees a doctor. McKenzie tweeted that he believed it was his ACL and that he heard a pop.

Steel Valley's D'Andre Pickens suffered an apparent ankle injury and was seen wielding crutches on the sideline. He did not return to the game – 42-7 loss to South Fayette – and the extent of his injury is not yet known.

Ranked teams that lost:

  • Class AAAA No. 3 North Allegheny lost at Seneca Valley, 20-6. Check CraigMeyerPG's Twitter for more on that game, including a picture of Seneca Valley fans rushing the field after the win.
  • Class AAA No. 5 Franklin Regional was shut out by Highlands, 17-0.
  • Class AA No. 5 Steel Valley lost to No. 4 South Fayette, 42-7. Brad Everett (@BREAL412) tweeted from that game.

Game of the Week

Gateway beat Kiski Area, 43-25, in a penalty- and turnover-laden Post-Gazette Game of the Week. Both teams were 2-0 in the Class AAAA Foothills Conference. Read through Mike White's live blog for more on that game.

No soup for you

Three WPIAL teams entered Week Three without allowing a point on the season.

All three of those streaks were broken Friday, but all three teams still won.

Clairton actually trailed briefly before coming back to beat California, 32-7, for its 66th-straight win. Beth-Center held off Carmichaels 28-22 and Shady Side Academy beat Valley 10-8.

Aerial assault

University Prep's Ronald Brown threw for 525 yards on 25-of-36 passing Friday in a 52-21 win over Carrick. The state record is 594 yards. Brown threw for 468 yards a week ago.

Odds & ends

  • High score: Washington 66, Charleroi 10.
  • Shutouts: 14.
  • OT games: none reported.
